Career-Life Situation

I'm Currently Unemployed

I wrote this VidBook mainly for the currently employed. If you implement the Meaningful Competence strategy, that will be true most of your career. But stuff happens. I should know. I survived many downturns in the oil industry, well-known for high highs and low lows. But I didn't survive two of the layoffs.

When I created this strategy, I recognized that some of my viewers and readers will at some point be laid off. They'll be in-between jobs. In-between is a tough place to be.

There are many consultants ready to take your money to help you build a better resume, or to get connections to hiring companies. But if you can clearly display your real value, that’s all the help you actually need.

However, if you’re not very good at displaying your real value yet, here’s how this VidBook will help you search for a job.

THE OUTPUT

You'll better describe how you brought relevant value in your past jobs, and how you can bring value to the job you're applying for. You’ll show that value well on your resume. And you'll be more confident about stating your value. The evidence and the confidence will increase your chances to land that next job.

THE PLAN

What You’ll Want

How the VidBook Helps

A perspective that helps you see the possibilities available to you.

In the foundation sections, 12, and 3, you learn a valuable output approach that is better than merely working hard.

A Wow-some resume.

The chapter The Resume Readiness Plan shows an approach to creating an ever-ready resume. It illustrates why you'll want to complete the next topics.

Industry language and metrics to use in your resume and your interviews.

The section Identify Relevant Business Results gets you focused on the value and related metrics that matter. You'll use that knowledge to improve your resume and to prepare for interviews.

Content for your resume and interviews.

The section Make Your Value Measurable builds your ability to create content that recruiters look for in a resume. That same content will help you impress your interviewers.

THE NEXT LEVEL

  • Determine what's keeping you from getting that next job. In the section Target Your Improvement you'll find an assessment tool called the Individual Mesh. Use the Individual Mesh to assess your current situation: the job search. You’ll make some adjustments, since you’re not in a current job. Consider supervisors to be those you want to hire you. Peers will be those you network with and who are helping you. Structures will be all those elements used by you and others in your job search.
  • Use the Individual Mesh assessment to determine why you might have lost your last job. It will help you not repeat the same behavior.

Why are these called Career-Life Situations?

If you're happy in a job, it shows in all other parts of your life. So if you're not satisfied with your job, it's unlikely you'll be satisfied with your life.

The Meaningful Competence strategy develops your real value for your job. That real value can help you know and build your value in other parts of your life.
