Career-Life Situation

I'm Employed, but Looking

Being employed but looking is a good situation. You’re still earning wages while you look for something better. And that something better can be either internal or external.

I once determined to make a job move because I was given only an average rating in a performance review even after being told how I was the greatest asset to the department. The job move had an awkward moment when I received an offer from a company on the same day I got a bonus check—an effort to make up for the poor appraisal. I ended up waiting until the next day to announce my resignation. I just didn't feel right accepting the bonus and resigning on the same day.

Here’s how to use the Meaningful Competence strategy to prepare for and search for that next job while you're still employed.

THE OUTPUT

When that right opportunity hits, you want to be ready. If you've done the work I’ve just recommended for you, you'll be ready. Your resume will already be mostly built. You'll represent yourself using the language of value instead of just describing what kind of work you did. You've increased the possibility of landing your next job quickly.

THE PLAN

What You’ll Want

How the VidBook Helps

A method to determine when it’s best to leave.

The chapter When to Look for that Next

Job discusses this topic.

Language that demonstrates that you bring real value. In the foundation sections, 12, and 3, you learn a the language of value and what it looks like.

A Wow-some resume.

The chapter The Resume Readiness Plan shows an approach to creating an ever-ready resume. It illustrates why you'll want to complete the sections listed in this table.

Industry language and metrics to use in your resume and your interviews.

The section Identify Relevant Business Results focuses you on the value and related metrics that matter. You'll use that knowledge to improve your resume and prepare for interviews.

Content for your resume and interviews.

The section Make Your Value Measurable builds your ability to create content that recruiters look for in a resume. That same content will help you impress your interviewers.

THE NEXT LEVEL

  • Build a new skill! Use the guidance given in the section Leverage to Increase Competence. This effort will get you ready to quickly build new skills when you get that next job.

Why are these called Career-Life Situations?

If you're happy in a job, it shows in all other parts of your life. So if you're not satisfied with your job, it's unlikely you'll be satisfied with your life.

The Meaningful Competence strategy develops your real value for your job. That real value can help you know and build your value in other parts of your life.
